Mitel was originally formed in 1972 in Ottawa, Canada and, having achieved success in the manufacture of telephone systems and telecom semi conductors, floated on the New York Stock Exchange in 1981.

British Telecom bought Mitel in 1985.

In 2000 one of it’s original founders, Sir Terry Matthews, re-acquired the Mitel telephone systems business from BT and since then the company has made significant investment in Voice Over IP telephony technology.

Mitel is now a leading provider of IP solutions to business communications systems markets employing around 3000 staff and trading in over 90 countries worldwide.

Mitel’s portfolio includes IP communications platforms, desktop devices and applications for contact centres, speech enabled unified communications, collaboration, presence, video conferencing and wireless communications.

The Mitel 3300 IP Communications Platform is a highly scalable IP-PBX that provides robust call control and extensive features for 10 to 65,000 users.

Mitel is the current (April 2009) UK commercial market leader in the deployment of IP telephony.
