Panasonic is a trading name of Matsushita Electric Industrial Co Limited of Japan (MEI), one of the world’s largest electronics manufacturers, ranked third on the Fortune 500 Electronics and Electrical Equipment Index.

MEI was founded in 1918 in Osaka, Japan when Konosuke Matsushita invented a 2 socket light bulb, commencing production and sale from his own home with three employees. MEI now employs 290,000 staff with annual sales of over $51 billion worldwide.

Panasonic UK was established in 1972 and now employs more than 500 staff with annual sales in excess of £700 million in the UK.  In addition MEI employs 4,000 staff in the UK at various manufacturing plants. Panasonic dominates the UK commercial business telephone system sector as the clear market leader with a market share of 18% (total systems installed Q1 2006, <100 extensions per site).
